First edition. 8vo. xv, [1], 451 [1, blank] pp., frontispiece facsimile of 'Emergence of the Picture Theory' from the original MS of the 'Notebooks'. Original red cloth, black section on spine with gilt lettering, dust jacket (offsetting to endpapers, faint spotting to edges of text block, otherwise internally clean; jacket slightly dust marked and unevenly toned, some trivial shelf wear to extremities, notwithstanding a very good copy overall). Cambridge, At the University Press.
The American philosopher Max Black was a leading in analytic philosophy in the years after World War II. He read mathematics at the University of Cambridge, where he attended the classes of G. E. Moore, Frank Plumpton Ramsey, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Black's abiding interest in Wittgenstein "culminated in A Companion to Wittgenstein’s Tractatus, a work some six times as long as the text it analysed; it was posthumously reprinted, and admired - even imitated - for its astute and engaging combination of exegesis, explication of sources, and critical comment” (Macmillan Encyclopedia of Philosophy).
