First edition. Three volumes. 8vo. xxvii, [1, blank], 196; [2], [197]-400; [2], [401]-549, [1, bank], [84, 'A Dictionary of Botanical Terms'], [18, 'General Index] pp., with 240 hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary full straight-grain dark green morocco, spines with five raised bands outlined in gilt, second and fourth panels lettered in gilt, the rest with attractive gilt ornaments within gilt frames, covers elaborately panelled with gilt and blind fillet borders and floral gilt roll-tooling, blue endpapers, edges in gilt (occasional faint spotting, mostly restricted to the preliminaries and terminal leaves, some occasional faint offsetting from plates, contents otherwise generally clean; extremities slightly worn, headcaps rubbed, spines only slightly faded, some minor surface wear to covers, notwithstanding a very attractive copy). London, T. Bensley.

A handsomely bound copy of this copiously illustrated popular introduction to the Linnaean classification system of botany issued in coloured and uncoloured states, here in its more desirable coloured issue.

Provenance: near contemporary ownership inscriptions of 'F.A. Crooke' and 'Catherine Post' to front free endpapers of each volume. Pencilled annotations to the list of plates at the front of the first volume, neat pencilled marginal highlighting to the Dictionary of Botanical Terms bound at the rear of the third volume in an early hand.
