MENUS FOR A GRAND FEAST
Two manuscript menus (one in English, one in French) in pen and ink measuring 210 by 145mm (wove paper) and 240 by 150mm (laid paper) tipped onto album sheets. Each elaborately illustrated with heraldry (the Montague arms), crockery and animals. [At sea, the Mediterranean],
Two charming relics of shipboard life, executed for the same (or very similar) meal, perhaps for a visiting French dignitary. Indeed, on the verso of the French menu is an ms. note referring "du general Ghorgi."
In 1837, Admiral Montague commanded HMS Malabar, which was at that time stationed between Portugal and Spain.
