First edition in French. Two volumes. 8vo. xix, [1], 341, [1]; [4], 315, [1] pp. Contemporary half mottled calf with marbled paper covered boards, flat spine panelled with simple gilt rolls, second panel lettered in gilt on red morocco label, fourth panel lettered in gilt on small round green morocco labels, yellow speckled edges (occasional foxing throughout both volumes, corners slightly bumped, notwithstanding a very good set). Paris, Arthur Bertrand.
An attractive copy of this French translation of Schmalz's only work on political economy, originally published in German in 1818 under the title 'Staatswirtschaftslehre in Briefen an einen teutschen Erbprinzen'. The book is notable for trying to revive physiocracy in Germany and at the head of Volume One there is a new version of Quesnay's 'tableau économique'. Karl Marx studied this book and took a particular interested in these tables.
From the library of Prince Grigory Gagarine (1810-1894), Russian painter and administrator, with his small oval library stamp to the half titles and title pages of both volumes, his name also stamped on title of Vol. 1, label with shelf number on front pastedowns and small printed paper shelf label at the foot of both volumes.
